What We Have Not Met Yet
Share
There are parts of ourselves we may never discover alone. We can know who we are, what we value, what we enjoy, and how we tend to move through life. And then someone enters our experience and something different becomes available. Maybe we become softer. Braver. More expressive. Maybe we begin seeing ourselves differently. Not because that person created something in us that was never there, but because the relationship gave something already within us a place to emerge.
We can recognize this when we think about the people who have shaped us. Some friendships bring out a kind of laughter we do not share with everyone. Certain people make conversation feel deeper. Someone may believe in us in a way that allows us to recognize our own capacity. Another person may introduce us to an interest, a place, or a way of living that becomes part of who we are. We are still ourselves, yet what becomes possible in us changes through what we meet.
Perhaps this is happening far beyond our relationships with people. So much of life seems to reveal itself through relationship. What something becomes can depend on what it comes into contact with, the conditions surrounding it, and what those conditions make possible. The potential may already be there, but it takes a particular encounter for that potential to become visible.
And that gives the unknown a beautiful dimension. There are people we have not met yet. Places we have never stood. Conversations we have never had. Experiences we cannot anticipate from where we are now. Somewhere within those encounters may be parts of us we have no way of knowing yet, because nothing in our present experience has called them forward.
Maybe becoming is not always about adding more to who we are. Sometimes life simply gives what is already within us something new to meet. And through that meeting, another expression of who we are becomes possible.
There is still so much within us, ready for the right relationship to reveal it.
